Choosing the right kids electric car can be tricky. Not only do they come in all shapes and sizes, you also need to consider the speed that your chosen model can reach. We’re always fielding questions from parents about how fast our toys can go, so we’ve put together a guide to understanding the difference between 12v ride on toys and 24v ride on toys.
What speed can a 12v electric vehicle reach?
To put it simply, the speed of the machine depends on two factors: the size of the motor and the size of the battery. Cars with a 12v battery tend to reach up to 4-5mph, the equivalent to a brisk adult walking pace. These vehicles are suitable for outdoor use as they have enough power to deal with rough terrains. We recommend 12v electric toys for children aged 3-6 year old.
What speed can a 24v electric vehicle reach?
A 24v model can reach speeds of up to 6pmh if they are also equipped with a 24v motor. These vehicles are ideal for kids who like to hit the trails, whether its grass, muddy hills or even gravel. We recommend these models for children over the age of 6.
When buying a 24v ride on toy you will notice that the ones that say they are 24v also have an asterisk next to them. This signifies that although the vehicles do contain 24v they are actually using two 12v batteries instead. This means that in actual fact the output is 12v. By adding a second 12v battery it is actually adding on extra charge rather than power.
Which model is best for my child?
There are many factors that go into choosing the right electric car or bike for your child. Let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons for choosing a 12v or a 24v machine.
Will your child be riding alone? A 24v vehicle can offer the capacity to carry two children whereas a 12v may only have one seat. If your child is over the normal weight capacity or older than the recommended age for the machine you buy, you risk damaging the structure of the vehicle. In this case we advise going for a higher power model.
How long will they be riding? A 24v electric ride on toys lasts around 3 hours when fully charged. A 12v vehicle may only last 1-2 hours.
